Retroactive Code Alert -

Upcoming retroactive NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) code provisions will warrant a safety improvement to existing escalators. By January 1, 2025, all existing escalators without skirt deflectors must comply with the installation of skirt deflectors as specified by Section 5.3.7.2 of ASME A17.5.2015 as modified by K3 2022. This upgrade work requires a NYC Department of Buildings PPN permit. Once the work commences, the escalator may not be placed back into service until this work is completed.

Time consuming and costly upgrades required by December 31, 2024.

  • Some available options are as follows: Install Skirt Deflectos

  • Independent Install

  • New Controller Modifications

  • Full Modernization

  • Design of upgrades could take up to Six (6) months. To avoid violations and or Red Tag (Escalator Removed from Service by D.O.B.), DTM recommends starting review of equipment and design options NOW!

What are Escalator Skirt Deflectors?

Escalator skirt deflectors are safety devices installed on escalators to prevent items such as clothing, shoes, or other objects from getting caught in the gap between the steps and the stationary skirt panel. The skirt panel is the stationary part of the escalator located on either side of the moving steps. The gap between the steps and the skirt can pose a risk of entrapment, and escalator skirt deflectors are designed to minimize this risk.

These deflectors are typically made of a flexible material and are mounted along the sides of the escalator, forming a barrier that helps guide loose items or clothing away from the gap. In case something gets caught, the deflector allows for a smoother passage and reduces the likelihood of entrapment or injury. Escalator safety features, including skirt deflectors, contribute to the overall safe operation of escalators in public spaces.
