Retroactive Code Alert

Retroactive Code Alert -

Upcoming retroactive NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) code provisions will warrant a safety improvement to existing single plunger brake elevators. By January 1, 2027, all existing traction elevators with single plunger brakes must comply with either alteration of single plunger assemblies to dual-plunger type, or compliance with Unintended Car Movement Protection as specified by Section 2.19.2 of ASME A17.1.2013. This upgrade work requires a NYC Department of Buildings permit. Once the work commences, the elevator may not be placed back into service until this work is completed and passes a DOB acceptance test.

Time consuming and costly upgrades required by December 31, 2026.

To avoid violations and or Red Tag (Elevator Removed from Service by D.O.B.), DTM recommends starting review of equipment and design options in 2024 for 2025 budgeting and install.

  • Some available options are as follows:

  • Modify existing machines with Rope Gripper Brakes

  • Sheave Brake

  • Modify existing brakes to a duel brake configuration.

  • New Machines, Ropes and Controller Modifications

  • Full Modernization

  • Design and Installation of upgrades could take up to one year.
